Steven Moffat, the writer behind series like Sherlock and Doctor Who, is a renowned talent who has made some great TV. His latest is inside man, a four-part crime drama.

It stars Stanley Tucci as Jefferson Grieff, an American death row prisoner with a sideline in detective work. He's assigned a case every week to solve before his very literal execution date.

The case is a good one, at least on the surface. But inside the story, it's a lot more of a thought experiment than anything else.

After all, what makes a good crime-solving hero? Whether that's the edgy neo-NCIS/Ghost Whisperer model or something more akin to Only Murders In The Building is entirely up to Moffat.

Moffat's scripting and pacy direction are solid enough, but the show falls short of what it could be. It's a shame, because the cast is strong. David Tennant's vicar Harry Watling is a compelling presence, and Louis Oliver does well in the role of Ben, who has a cocky attitude early on but then becomes more panicked as things get darker.

The premise of a good person being caught up in a crime is nothing new, but the way it's handled in Inside Man is simply too absurd. At times, it feels like the story is more about thought experiment than narrative.

Moffat, a BAFTA and Emmy award-winning writer, is known for his ability to create drama and thrills. He has written numerous Doctor Who stories, as well as a number of episodes of Sherlock.

Moffat's first television work was the teen drama series Press Gang (BBC2, 1989-93). He followed this up with sitcom Joking Apart (1993-95), which combined hyper-plotted farce and painful emotional honesty.

The cynical, adult antidote to Friends that was Coupling (BBC2, 2000-04) established him as a serious talent. The elaborate sex comedy roamed the battlefields of the sex wars, distinguishing itself with sophisticated plotting and supremely filthy wit.
