How to Watch Mulan 2020 Online

One of the most iconic scenes in the animated version is when Mulan cut her hair to wipe off her make-up before leaving her family and preparing to join the army. However, the live-action version has completely omitted this, replacing it with an intense backing track.

Other alterations are more subtle, but they still have left fans upset. For example, Mulan’s new love interest is a bland, inoffensive recruit who claims to be a supporter of women’s rights and leads the other soldiers in chanting, “I believe Mulan!” This is in direct contrast to the original’s Li Shang, who was a devoted, bisexual officer who fell in love with her.

In addition to the aforementioned changes, Mulan 2020 has been criticized for its depiction of China’s ongoing human rights violations in its Uighur Muslim population. The live action reimagining of Mulan is finally available for streaming on Disney+. Originally slated for a March 27 release and then a July 23 debut, the film was fast-tracked to Disney Plus after theaters across the United States closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The movie, which stars Liu Yifei as the brave Fa Mulan and Donnie Yen as her commanding officer Commander Tung, tells the story of a young woman who fights in place of her father during a Northern invasion. But as she proves herself to be a brave and loyal warrior, she breaks cultural norms to change her nation’s destiny for the better.

It’s a good film with a lot of great performances and well-told action scenes. But the movie also goes through some major changes from the original animated version. It adds in a dark magic witch and superhuman martial arts abilities, which feel like movie fluff rather than a true reimagining of the tale.

Fortunately, the movie does well overseas. As a result, Disney may be able to recoup some of the $200 million it cost to produce and distribute the film.

However, this version also includes a much more mature story with an emphasis on female empowerment and family devotion. It also features powerful performances and intense battle sequences that make it a much more realistic retelling of the popular Ballad of Mulan.

While this adaptation doesn’t quite match the high standards of Disney’s other recent live-action reimaginings of Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, or The Lion King, it isn’t a bad choice for families who enjoy martial arts movies and Disney’s history of epic, action-packed adventures. The movie’s retelling of the popular Chinese folktale emphasizes the story’s themes of female empowerment, and it aims to address gender roles more directly than many other Disney reimaginings.

Is it on Amazon Prime?
