There are few TV comedies as niche and idiosyncratic as Murder in Successville, and few get laughs quite like it. The series features hard-boiled detective DI Sleet and his celebrity sidekick, who must improvise their way through a murder mystery while everyone else has scripted lines.

Each week, a celebrity is thrown into the fictional town of Successville and forced to figure out whodunnit. The list of celebrities who have been thrown in so far include Jamie Laing, Dermot O’Leary, Greg James and Deborah Meaden.

When Lady Gaga is contacted by a topiary vandal, the call leads to a murder investigation and it’s up to new recruit Deborah Meaden to team up with DI Sleet to solve the crime. She will also rub shoulders with Lady Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, Boris Johnson and Nicki Minaj who are all suspects in this Agatha Christie style murder.

This week the series is back on BBC Three and DI Sleet is joined by a very unusual and very funny guest star; Spice Girl Emma Bunton. This is the first time the celebrity has been allowed to improvise their way through an episode and it is hilarious watching it all go wrong.

The celebrity must not only improvise their way through an episode but they also have to follow a set of rules that only Sleet and the rest of the cast know. These are the rules that determine whether they are allowed to be a part of the show and what they can do in each scene.

Meaden plays the role of Sleet’s sidekick well and her ad-libbed performance really gives her character depth. She was a great addition to the series and is a brilliant star.

She has a fantastic screen presence and she was always very confident when she was on the show, which helped her to get through many episodes. She is very strong at delivering her lines with huge vigour and a good sense of humour.

As you can see she has a great rapport with DI Sleet and has great chemistry with the other stars as well. She is a great actress and a lovely person too. She is also very charitable and involved in a number of charities that work for the betterment of wildlife, environment and music as well as for underprivileged people.

DI Sleet and Dermot O’Leary

If you’ve ever dreamed of having a posh celebrity as your crime-solving sidekick, then BBC Three’s Murder in Successville is for you. It sees comedian Tom Davis star as DI Sleet, a comedically incompetent copper who’s recruited to help hapless celebs such as Dermot O’Leary solve a series of baffling murders.

In each episode, Sleet recruits a guest celebrity to help him solve a murder. This celebrity is then thrown into the world of Successville, a surreal town where celebrities have to live by the rules and there’s a high rate of homicide.

As Sleet and his celebrity partner search for clues, they’re forced to confront a host of strange characters, from McVitie’s heir Jamie Laing to One Direction crooner Zayn Malik. They’re also challenged to find out what happened to the famously murderous Icelandic singer Bjork, whose body is found in a warehouse.

For example, Sleet and his partner meet up with the man who killed Bruno Tonioli (Strictly Come Dancing judge Jamie Laing), who was now running a local restaurant. The pair also investigate the Carr twins – Jimmy and Alan, who run a mafia gang – and Harry Styles and his One Direction gang.

It’s a confusing mix of semi-improvised comedy and murder mystery pastiche. And while the characters aren’t always completely believable, they’re so funny and bizarre that it’s impossible to keep them off your radar.

The show has an incredibly strong cast, including Deborah Meaden, Dermot O’Leary, Greg James and Louis Smith. But I’m not sure it’s worth your time.

“It’s like watching a comedy sketch with a detective,” says Davis. “It gets weirder as you go on. But I think it’s worth a watch if you like murder mysteries.”

Other guests include Deborah Meaden, who met an evil Nicki Minaj in a recent episode and Made in Chelsea’s Jamie Laing, who investigated the death of Bruno Tonioli with Strictly Come Dancing judge James McVitie. They also questioned Mary Berry, the owner of a strip club, and John Bishop, who runs a horse racing stable in Successville.

This week, Sleet and his celebrity partner Kimberley Wyatt attempt to track down a killer at the Successville hospital. Suspects include Nurse Adele, Doctor Obama and surgeon Bob Geldof.

As a rule, I’m not a fan of sitcoms or improvised comedy but if you have a hankering for a bit of silly fun then Murder in Successville is the show for you. It’s a strange, manic and hilarious thing that would work perfectly well on BBC2.

But what really makes this series stand out is the fact that all of the celebrities that appear on the show are actually real people. This makes the whole process that little bit more surreal and the actors can do a great job of capturing their audience’s awe, wonder or shock at the bizarre situations they find themselves in.

In the latest episode of Murder in Successville, Greg James is paired with DI Sleet to help crack the case of Reece Witherspoon’s murder. This is the first time that he’s been paired with a celebrity sidekick in the series and it’s certainly an experience he won’t soon forget.

It’s hard to describe the scene in which Greg James meets with DI Sleet in the second episode of the series, but we can say that it was one of the most baffling and entertaining bits of the show. It’s a weirdly watchable celebrity improvised cop caper and Greg James is utterly brilliant.

The episode sees Greg and DI Sleet visit a variety of locations for their improvised investigation, including casino owner Justin Bieber, dieting priest Gary Barlow, Mary Berry’s strip club Saggy Bottoms and an uncanny re-enactment of the final scene of the iconic film X-Men, with James’s performance of the opening anthem perfectly fitting in.

As the two detectives try to find out who the killer is, they interview a range of suspects including Nurse Adele and Doctor Obama.

This episode follows on from the previous one and is a must-watch for fans of murder comedy. It’s also a great way to see what a celebrity sidekick looks like in the spotlight!
