Jacob Perez

The Marksman is a simplistic but watchable low-key actioner that finds the right balance between heart and wit. Its storyline is simple, but Neeson's performance and Perez's chemistry make it memorable and well worth watching.

The film stars Liam Neeson as Jim, a hardened rancher and ex-Marine who becomes the unlikely defender of Miguel (Jacob Perez), an immigrant boy fleeing a Mexican drug cartel over the Arizona border. As their unlikely friendship develops, Jim shelves his personal problems to help Miguel reach safety.

Neeson's acting isn't the best, but he brings enough to the table to make him a memorable character. He's especially impressive when he's not in his macho best, and he and Perez exhibit an enchanting chemistry throughout the film.

In a story of two unlikely heroes, Neeson and Perez share a compelling performance that's all the more impressive when you consider that this is their first feature. It's easy to root for Jim and Miguel and believe in their growing bond.

While the screenplay isn't groundbreaking or anything, the film has a good deal of heart and a satisfying climax that's bound to have audiences on their feet cheering for these two strangers. And the cinematography by Mark Patten is terrific — particularly in the widescreen moments.

As the movie opens, Neeson's character has his hand in some shady dealings with a cartel member who may or may not be connected to him. But when he and Miguel are reunited, Neeson's Jim is transformed into an earnest defender.

Perez does a wonderful job as Miguel too, matching Neeson beat for beat and displaying an incredibly naturalistic performance. The young actor avoids the usual pitfalls that child actors can fall into when cast in a 'child in distress' role, such as being too annoying or causing the audience to focus on his bad behavior rather than his character's.

The Marksman is a simplistic but a watchable low-key actioner that's perfect for fans of Liam Neeson and those who enjoy films with a good dose of heart. It's also an effective use of the camera, and a welcome addition to Neeson's filmography.
